Liver Cancer: Liver Cancer Types, Causes and Symptoms - Top 10 Symptoms of Liver Cancer Everybody need to Know

Liver Cancer

About Liver Cancer :
Our liver is a football-sized organ that sits in the upper right portion of your abdomen, underneath  your diaphragm and above your stomach. Liver cancer is cancer that starts in the cells of liver. Liver cancer occurs more often in men than women. It is usually seen in people age 50 or older. Malignant or cancerous cells that arise out of liver cells are called hepatocellular carcinoma, and cancer that arises in the ducts of the liver is called cholangiocarcinoma. The most widely recognized form of liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma (hcc), which begins in the main type of liver cell (hepatocyte). Other types of cells in the liver can develop cancer, but these are much less common.

Not all cancers that affect the liver are considered liver cancer. Cancer that starts in the liver is called primary liver cancer. Cancer that starts in another part of the body — such as the colon, lung or breast — and then spreads to the liver is called metastatic cancer rather than liver cancer. As Metastatic colon cancer is used  to describe cancer that begins in the colon and spreads to the liver.

Types of Liver Cancer

Basically, Primary Liver cancer and Secondary Liver cancer are the types of Liver  Cancer :

1. Primary Liver cancer

a) Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)is the most common type of primary liver cancer. HCC accounts for approximately 75 percent of all liver cancers.
HCC starts in the main type of liver cells, called hepatocellular cells. In Most cases HCC are the result of infection with hepatitis B or C, or cirrhosis of the liver caused by alcohol.

b) Fibrolamellar HCC

Fibrolamellar HCC is a rare sub type of hepatocellular cancer (HCC). Fibrolamellar HCC typically more responsive to treatment than other types of liver cancer.

c) Cholangiocarcinoma

Cancer that starts anywhere along the bile ducts is called Cholangiocarcinoma .  Cholangiocarcinomas account for 10-20 percent of all liver cancers. If cancer starts in the section of the ducts inside the liver, it is called intra hepatic cholangiocarcinoma. If the cancer starts in the section of the ducts outside the liver, it is called extra hepatic cholangiocarcinoma and is treated as bile duct cancer.

d) Angiosarcoma

Angiosarcoma begin in the blood vessels of the liver and grow quickly. They are typically diagnosed at an advanced stage. It is most often diagnosed in people in their 70's and 80's. Angiosarcoma accounts for about 1 percent of all liver cancers.

e) Hepatoblastoma

Hepatoblastoma is a very rare type of primary liver cancer that usually affects young children. It is most often diagnosed in children under 3. Hepatoblastoma is generally treated with surgery and chemotherapy.

2. Secondary liver cancer

Secondary liver cancer or liver metastasis, develops when primary cancer from another part of the body spreads to the liver. Most liver metastases originate from colon or colorectal cancer. More than half of people diagnosed with colorectal cancer develop secondary liver cancer.

Lung Cancer Causes

It's not clear what causes most instances of liver cancer. However at times, the cause is known. For instance, chronic infection with certain hepatitis viruses can cause liver cancer.

Some of the Risk Factors of Liver Cancer are :-

✓ Lung Cancer Causes: Excessive alcohol consumption

Consuming more than a moderate amount of alcohol daily over many years can lead to irreversible liver damage and increase your risk of liver cancer.

✓ Lung Cancer Causes: Obesity

Having an unhealthy body mass index (BMI) increases the risk of liver cancer. It found that the risk of liver cancer is higher in people who have a lot of weight around their waist
Alcohol is the major cause of Lung Cancer

✓ Lung Cancer Causes: Chronic infection with Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C Virus

Long term infection with hepatitis B or C virus maximizes the danger of developing liver cancer because it causes damage to the liver.

Lung Cancer Causes: Cirrhosis

This progressive and irreversible condition causes scar tissue to form in your liver and increases your possibilities of developing liver cancer.

✓ Lung Cancer Causes: Certain inherited liver diseases

Liver diseases that can increase the risk of liver cancer include hemochromatosis and Wilson's disease.

✓ Lung Cancer Causes: Diabetes

People with  diabetes have a greater risk of liver cancer than do people who don't. The greater risk may be due to the higher levels of insulin in people with diabetes or due to liver damage caused by the diabetes.

✓ Lung Cancer Causes: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a group of conditions including mild hepatic steatosis and non alcoholic steatohepatitis. In these conditions fat develops in the liver. The fat causes inflammation and damage, which may lead to liver cancer.

✓ Lung Cancer Causes: Consumption of Aflatoxins

Aflatoxin is a substance found in mouldy peanuts, wheat, soya beans, groundnuts, corn and rice. People from Africa and Asia who have consumed these over a long period of time have an expanded risk of developing hepatocellular liver cancer

✓ Lung Cancer Causes: Smoking

There is some evidence that smoking can increase the risk of Liver cancer.  Researchers estimate that almost a quarter of liver cancers in the UK are caused by smoking. In smokers who also have hepatitis C or hepatitis B virus infection the risk is increased further.

✓ Lung Cancer Causes: HIV or AIDS

People with HIV or AIDS have five times higher risk of liver Cancer than people who don't have HIV or AIDS.

✓ Lung Cancer Causes: Family history

An American study found that individuals who have a first degree relative (parent, sibling or sister) treatment with liver cancer have double the risk of developing it.

✓ Lung Cancer Causes: Removal of Gallbladder

People who have their gallbladder uprooted to get rid of gallstones may have an increased risk of liver cancer. The increased risk may be due to raised pressure in the bile duct causing long term inflammation in the liver tissue.

✓ Lung Cancer Causes: Exposure to Chemicals

People at their workplace come into contact with some chemicals like vinyl chloride which can increase liver cancer risk. There is also limited evidence that exposure to arsenic, polychlorinated biphenyls and trichloroethylene may do so.
