Drug Abuse or Drug addiction Among Youth:

Drug Abuse, also called Substance Abuse or Chemical Abuse, is a disorder that is characterized by a destructive pattern of using a substance that leads to significant problems or distress.
Substance Abuse can develop into lifelong issues such as substance dependence, chronic health problems, and social and financial consequences.

Here are some facts on Drug Abuse by Youths:
⇒  Drug abuse kills about 200,000 people worldwide each year, according to United Nations (UN) report.

⇒  Teens who consistently learn about the risks of drugs from their parents are up to 50% less likely to use drugs than those who don't.

⇒  The incidence of Drug Abuse among children and adolescents is higher than the general population.

⇒  The average age of first experimentation with drugs is 13, and for alcohol it is even younger.

⇒  Over 50 percent of all traffic accidents involve the use of drugs or alcohol, having several of these being critical.

⇒  It is estimated that drugs and alcohol are a factor in at least 80 percent of domestic violence violence.

Effects of Alcohol in our Brain and Body

⇒  Alcohol and other drugs contribute to over 50 percent of all suicides and over 50 percent of all violent crimes.

⇒  Over 50 percent of all traffic accidents involve the use of drugs or Alcohol.

⇒  More than 40 percent of all college students with academic problems are drugs and alcohol users. 

Drug Abuse in India

♥ 13.1% of the people involved in Drug or Substance Abuse in India, are below 20 years.

♥ The most common drugs of abuse in India are ganja, hashish, opium and heroin.

♥ According to a UNICEF estimate, 90,000 children in India are drug addicts.

♥ According to official data from the ministry of social justice and empowerment, An estimated 7. 5 crore Indians usually are medicine fans plus the variety is going up significantly.

♥ The drug menace has been intensified in Punjab over the last four years, and currently 75% of the Punjab youth are severely addicted to drugs that's 3 out of every 4 children.

♥ As per the state wise NCRB data of 2012,
Punjab State has emerged at the top position with 10,220 registered cases followed by
Uttar Pradesh with 6,755 cases
Maharashtra- 1,903 cases
Tamil Nadu- 1,402 cases
Rajasthan- 1,115 cases
Jammu and Kashmir-411 cases
Gujarat-68 cases ,despite of sharing its border with Pakistan, which is major supplier of narcotics

♥ Mumbai city with 1,512 cases registered the maximum cases of drug trafficking.

♥ The lowest number of cases were registered in
Vasai Virar of Maharashtra (2) followed by
Aurangabad (Bihar) with 3 cases,
Dhanbad and Ranchi (both Jharkhand) with 4 each and
Vadodara and Rajkot (Gujarat) with 5 each.
♥ At least 25,426 people committed suicide due to drug and addiction related problems in the last 10 years across India.

Peer pressure, adolescent immaturity and irresponsible parenting is the three-headed monster luring our children towards addiction and a life of suffering and regret.

Drug Laws in India

The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act,1985, were enacted with stringent provisions to curb this menace. The Act envisages a minimum term of 10 years imprisonment extendable to 20 years and fine of Rs. 1 lakh extendable up to Rs. 2 lakhs for the offenders.

Comprehensive strategy involving specific programmes to bring about an overall reduction in use of drugs has been evolved by the various government agencies and NGOs and is further supplemented by measures like education, counseling, treatment and rehabilitation programmes. Substance abuse can be addressed atthe individual level, at the local level, social level, national level and at the cross-national level.

At the individual level, there has to be a synthesis of biological understanding with the exploration of background sociocultural factors. At the national and cross-national level, there has to be a concerted effort of all the countries in managing the issue of substance abuse, taking into account the local socio-cultural and political scenarios.
